About Nifty Bank Index

The Nifty Bank tracks the performance of major banking stocks listed (as of now) on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). The index represents a maximum of 14 companies of the banking sector in India, including both public sector and private sector banks.

Since banks are closely linked with interest rates, credit demand, and economic activity, the Nifty Bank share price movement is often seen as a key indicator of financial sector strength.

How Are Nifty Bank Stocks Selected?

The Nifty Bank includes leading banking stocks selected based on sector classification, liquidity, and free-float market capitalization criteria set by NSE Indices Ltd.

  • Nifty 500 Universe: Companies must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review.
  • Banking Sector Only: Only companies classified under the banking sector are eligible.

  • Minimum Listing Requirement: Companies should have at least one month of listing history on the National Stock Exchange of India.
  • Preference for F&O Stocks: Preference is given to companies available in the NSE Futures & Options segment.
  • Final Selection Criteria: The final 14 banks are selected based on free-float market capitalization.

How is the Nifty Bank Index Calculated?

The Nifty Bank is calculated using the periodic capped free-float market capitalization method, which reflects the combined market value of its constituent banking stocks.

  • Free-Float Market Capitalization: The index considers only publicly available shares for trading, excluding promoter and locked-in holdings.
  • Periodic Capped Methodology: Stock weights are periodically capped to prevent excessive concentration of a single bank in the index.
  • Number of Constituents: The Nifty Bank index consists of 14 banking companies.
  • Base Date and Base Value: The index has a base date of January 1, 2000, with a base value of 1000.
  • Real-Time Calculation: The index value is calculated in real time during market hours, enabling investors to track Nifty Bank live movements.
  • Semi-Annual Rebalancing: The index is reviewed and rebalanced twice a year, with cut-off dates on January 31 and July 31, based on six months of average market data.
