What Is NSE?
NSE stands for National Stock Exchange. It was established in 1992 and started operations in 1994, situated in Mumbai. NSE is considered the first exchange in India to introduce a fully automated electronic trading system. The aim of providing an advanced platform is to make market participation faster, accessible, and transparent for investors.
NSE Indices Ltd, a subsidiary of NSE, provides a wide range of indices to help track the performance and overall health of the Indian stock market.
What Are NSE Indices?
NSE indices are known as benchmark indicators used to measure and monitor the performance of carefully selected equities/stocks of entities listed on the National Stock Exchange. Each NSE index represents how a particular market sector, segment, or strategy is performing.
Investors track the NSE indices list to monitor market sentiments, analyze investments, and assess the overall economic health of the country.
How Many Indices Are Under NSE?
NSE is maintaining a total of 421 indices as of January 30, 2026. These indices are categorized across different segments, including the market cap, sectoral, thematic, strategy, and more. However, it is important to note that the number of indices is subject to change as the exchange actively launches new indices or restructures the existing ones.
Major NSE Indices in the Indian Stock Market
Here are 5 widely-known NSE indices you'll find in the stock market:
NIFTY 50: Considered as the primary benchmark indicator of the NSE. This index reflects the 50 largest, most liquid blue-chip companies on NSE.
NIFTY 100: This index comprises all 50 companies of NIFTY 50 and the next 50 largest companies, also known as NIFTY NEXT 50.
NIFTY AUTO: This index represents how the listed automotive companies are performing in the market.
NIFTY BANK: This index reflects the performance of the 12 largest-capitalized banking stocks in India.
NIFTY DIVIDEND OPPORTUNITIES 50: This strategy index tracks 50 companies with high dividend yield and a consistent track record.
How Do NSE Indices Function?
NSE indices are a parameter used to analyze whether an investment is performing well or an economy is growing. These indices function using a methodology known as free-float market capitalization. This approach only considers shares/equities available for public trading, not held by any promoters or shareholders.
Free-floats (publicly traded shares) are taken into consideration while deciding the index value, meaning companies with high free-float value have a great influence on the index. This approach makes sure that the live NSE indices value reflects the market conditions accurately.
Types of NSE Indices
There are different types of NSE indices, based on asset type, each carrying a different purpose:
- Broad-Based Indices: This category of indices reflects the performance of the entire share market or a particular segment of it based on the company size (market cap). For example: NIFTY 50, NIFTY NEXT 50, NIFTY 500, etc.
- Sectoral Indices: This index category represents stocks of companies of a specific industry or sector. The aim is to help investors identify sector-specific trends and opportunities. For example: NIFTY Bank, NIFTY Auto, NIFTY IT, and more.
- Thematic Indices: This category analyze performance of companies linked to a particular idea or theme, rather than a sector. The aim is to benefit from multi-sectoral trends. A few examples include NIFTY CPSE, NIFTY EV & New Age Automotive, etc.
- Strategy Indices: This index category is also known as the Smart Beta index. They primarily use quantitative rules or factors to select stocks. The examples may include Nifty Momentum, Nifty Quality, and more.
- Fixed Income Indices: This index category represents debt instruments, not equities. The aim is to track the performance of the fixed return investments. Example: Nifty G-Sec Indices, Nifty Corporate Bond Index, etc.
- Others: Considering the rest of the asset classes, there are hybrid or multi-asset-based indices available for comparison on the NSE portal. Also, with the growing popularity of AIF (Alternative Investment Funds), the exchange has assigned certain benchmarks for each category.
