What Is the Share Market?
The Share Market is a platform (or a marketplace) where stocks of publicly listed companies are traded. It can be in the form of stocks, mutual funds, ETFs, bonds, derivatives, and a few other instruments. Traders and investors can buy and sell these instruments during the market hours – 9:15 am to 3:30 pm.
In India, we mainly have two stock exchanges — NSE and BSE. And most buying and selling now happens electronically with the help of a demat and trading account.
What are NSE And BSE In the Share Market?
NSE, or the National Stock Exchange, is a stock exchange platform in India where shares are traded electronically. It was established in 1992 (officially commenced in 1994) to increase transparency and speed in trading. Today, most trades in India take place on the NSE due to its high volume and liquidity.
BSE (or Bombay Stock Exchange) is popularly known as the oldest stock exchange in India. It has been around since 1875. Just like NSE, it allows investors and traders to buy and sell shares of listed stock companies.
Both NSE and BSE work almost the same for a common investor. The difference is mostly in indices — Nifty belongs to NSE, and Sensex belongs to BSE.
Types of Share Market
Generally, there are two types of share markets in India. It includes:
Primary Market
This is where companies come for the first time to raise money from the public. When a company launches an IPO, investors apply for shares here. You're buying shares directly from the company, not from another investor.
Secondary Market
Once the company is listed, its shares move to the secondary market. This is where regular buying and selling happen between investors and traders on exchanges like NSE and BSE.
How Does The Share Market Work?
The share market is a marketplace where securities are traded between buyers and sellers. These securities include shares, mutual funds, ETFs, bonds, and other listed instruments.
On a daily basis, what you see as the share market today or the stock market live today is actually thousands of buy and sell orders getting matched in real time. When you place an order through your trading app, it goes to the stock exchange (NSE or BSE), where buyers and sellers are matched based on price and quantity.
Once the order is matched, the trade is executed. However, the shares are not credited instantly, though. They follow a T+1 settlement cycle, which means if you buy shares today, they will reflect in your demat account the next working day.
The share market performance today mainly depends on demand and supply. When more people try to buy a stock than sell it, the price moves up. If buying pressure becomes extreme and there are hardly any sellers, the stock can hit an upper circuit, and vice versa causes a lower circuit.
Types of Participants in the Share Market
In total, there are different types of participants in the share market, and each plays a different role.
Investors
They invest with a mindset to hold assets for a longer period.
Traders
The reverse is for traders who buy and sell stocks frequently to book short-term gains. This includes intraday traders, swing traders, and positional traders.
Retail Investors
These are individual investors like us, investing suitable amounts through demat accounts.
Institutional Investors
It includes investors like mutual funds, insurance companies, banks, and foreign institutions. Their trades are large and can move (influence) the share market performance.
Brokers
These stock brokers act as intermediaries between buyers and sellers to help you place trades on the exchange.
Market Makers & Regulators
Market makers help maintain liquidity, while regulators like SEBI ensure the market works in a fair and transparent way.
Market Intermediaries
- Depository Participant (DP) – Acts as a link between you and the depository (NSDL or CDSL). They hold your shares in electronic form in your demat account.
- Clearing Member – Responsible for clearing and settling trades. They make sure money and shares are exchanged smoothly after a trade is executed.
- Trading Member – Authorized members of the stock exchange who can place buy and sell orders on behalf of clients.
Assets Traded In The Share Market
The share market has multiple asset types, each serving a different purpose.
Equity Shares
Equities represent ownership in a company. Stock prices move daily based on demand and supply and are reflected in the share market performance today.
Mutual Funds
The MFs pool money from multiple investors and invest in equities, debt, or a mix of both. Their returns are linked to overall market movement, even though they aren't traded live like stocks.
ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds)
Similar to mutual funds, but they are available on the stock exchange like shares, and their prices move throughout the day.
Bonds & Debentures
These are fixed-income instruments where investors lend money to companies or the government and earn interest. They are generally less volatile than equities.
Derivatives
Futures and options (F&O) derive their value from underlying assets like stocks or indices. These instruments react quickly to market movements and are commonly used for hedging or short-term trading.
Currencies & Commodities
Some exchanges may allow trading in currency pairs and also commodities such as gold, silver, and crude oil, often influenced by global market trends.
Each asset behaves differently and suits different investment or trading needs.
