How to Start SIP Investment with Anand Rathi?
What Is SIP Investment?
SIP, also Systematic Investment Plan, is a method through which you can make regular investments in your mutual fund. This systematic plan allows users to make SIP online as low as ₹100-250. Select an amount, frequency, and duration to start SIP to invest in mutual fund.
The frequency of the SIP plans can be weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually (every 6 months), or yearly. So, whether you're a new beginner or want to get disciplined with investing, SIP will give you a simple, structured way to invest regularly.
How Does SIP Investment Work?
The backend process of an SIP investment happens when a person starts a SIP plan. While signing up to this facility, a bank mandate must be submitted, which will allow monthly or weekly deductions from your bank account towards the mutual fund.
For example, if you've selected a regular plan with a SIP amount of ₹500 to happen on the 3rd of every month, the bank will behave the same. Every month, on the 3rd, ₹500 will be deducted. In return, when the mutual fund receives the investment, respective units will be allocated to you.
Now, this process can vary slightly (amount or frequency) depending on the SIP plans available.
Types of SIP Investment
There are different plans in mutual funds for SIP. A few of the popular options available for MF investment include;
Regular SIP Plan
A standard SIP where you invest a fixed amount at regular intervals (weekly, monthly, etc.).
Top-up SIP Plan
It allows you to increase your SIP amount periodically at intervals. So, if your income grows or you want to boost your investments over time, this plan can suit you.
Flexible SIP (Flex SIP)
With this mutual fund SIP, you change your SIP amount based on your cash flow. You can increase or decrease the installment depending on your financial situation.
Trigger SIP
As the name says, this SIP is activated based on certain triggers or predefined conditions, such as NAV level, index movement, or a specific date. So, if an investor has a clear trigger-based strategy, this SIP can suit them.
Perpetual SIP Plan
If an SIP could be unlimited (or endless), a Perpetual SIP will have the credits. Invest in SIP for 5 years, 10 years, or more - as long as you can. It does not have a fixed end date. It continues until you manually stop it, making it convenient for long-term investing.
Multi SIP
Invest in multiple mutual funds with "Multi SIP." Set up a single SIP instruction to invest in desired MF schemes – without creating separate SIPs for each scheme
Value SIP
This plan will invest as per varying market conditions. Generally, it will invest more when markets are low and less when markets are high – aiming to optimize the purchase cost.
Documents Required to Invest in SIP
To start a SIP in a mutual fund, you'll need:
- PAN Card
- Aadhar (with mobile-linked OTP)
- Bank Details
- Voter ID / License proof
- Address Proof
- Cancelled Cheque / Bank Proof, etc.
That's all! Once your KYC is done, you can start SIP in any mutual fund instantly.
Tax Benefits on SIP Investment
SIP itself doesn't offer tax benefits, but investing through SIP in ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) does.
With ELSS funds, you can claim:
- Tax deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh as per Section 80C.
- Shortest lock-in period of 3 years among all 80C options.
For other mutual fund categories, taxation depends on the fund type and holding period. There could be a tax deduction of ₹1.25 lakhs on certain funds held for a specific period.
How To Choose The Right Mutual Fund For SIP?
Define Your Goal
Every mutual fund has its own purpose – short-term, long-term, wealth creation, or tax saving. Finding a fund that aligns with your goals matters.
Check Your Risk Appetite
Before selecting one, consider the level of risk you can tolerate in your investment. It differs for each - be it equity, debt, or hybrid.
Look at Fund Performance
The historical performance of the fund varies in different market cycles. Some funds may have performed better in a short span, and the reverse works for others. Hence, focus on long-term consistency rather than short-term spikes.
Review Risk Metrics
Along with the fund's basic metrics, review its volatility, drawdowns, and category rankings to understand how it performs in different market conditions.

FAQs
What is a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP)?
A SIP lets you invest a fixed amount in mutual funds at regular intervals. It can be monthly, weekly, semi-annually, quarterly, or even yearly.
How is SIP different from a one-time investment?
SIP tries to spread your investment over time at regular checkpoints. In contrast, a one-time investment puts a lump sum (bulk amount) into the market at once.
What is the minimum amount required to start an SIP?
You can start a SIP with as low as ₹100, depending on the mutual fund. In some cases, it can be ₹250 or ₹500.
Can I start multiple SIPs in different mutual funds?
Yes, you can start multiple SIPs online across different schemes based on your goals.
Is SIP a good investment option for beginners?
Yes, SIPs are beginner-friendly as they encourage disciplined investing with small amounts.
How long should I continue my SIP investment?
For the duration of your financial goal, longer tenures generally work better for wealth creation.
Can I increase or decrease my SIP amount later?
Yes, you can modify your SIP amount at any time based on your cash flow.
What happens if I miss an SIP payment?
Your SIP for that month may skip, but your investment continues. Frequent misses may lead to cancellation by the fund house.
Is SIP Investment safe in India?
SIP is a method of investing in which you start a SIP plan. The actual risk depends on the type of mutual fund you choose—equity, debt, or hybrid.
What are the benefits of investing through SIP?
SIPs offer disciplined investing, flexibility, rupee-cost averaging, and the power of compounding.
How is SIP return calculated?
SIP returns are typically measured using XIRR, which calculates returns on periodic investments.
Can I pause or stop my SIP anytime?
Yes, you can stop or pause your ongoing SIP through your mutual fund platform or app.
Is SIP suitable for short-term goals?
Debt SIPs may suit short-term goals; equity SIPs are better for long-term goals.
What are the tax implications of SIP investment in India?
Tax depends on the fund type—equity, debt, or hybrid—and the holding period. SIP investments in ELSS qualify for 80C benefits.
How does SIP give better returns than a savings account or an FD?
SIP returns depend on market performance. Historically, equity SIPs have offered better long-term returns than FDs or savings accounts, but they also come with market risk.
Can I withdraw money from my SIP anytime?
Yes, you can withdraw money from your mutual fund investment, but a few funds are exceptions. For example, in ELSS funds, there is a 3-year lock-in period applicable. Likewise, Fixed Maturity Plans (FMP) are also a closed-ended fund.
What is SIP Top-up, and how does it work?

Can I invest in SIP online?
Yes, SIPs can be started online through any mutual fund distributor or similar platforms.
How to increase the duration of SIP?
