WeWork India Stake Sale: Global Affiliate Sells 2.52% Stake for ₹244 Crore

WeWork India Stake Sale: Global Affiliate Sells 2.52% Stake for ₹244 Crore

On August 14, 1 Ariel Way Tenant Limited, a UK-based affiliate of WeWork Global, sold 35 lakh shares of WeWork India at ₹697.55 apiece. The transaction was worth around ₹244.14 crore, according to exchange data reported by Moneycontrol.

The sale reduced the affiliate's stake from 14.82% to around 12.3%.

But there's another side to the transaction that investors may find interesting.

Who Bought the WeWork India shares?

The shares sold by WeWork Global were picked up by four investors:

  • Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company
  • Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund
  • ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund
  • HDFC Standard Life Insurance
  • Citigroup Global Markets Mauritius

Motilal Oswal's PMS and mutual fund entities together bought 13.6 lakh shares, worth around ₹94.9 crore.

ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund bought approximately 14.21 lakh shares worth ₹99.18 crore, while Citigroup and HDFC Standard Life each acquired around 3.59 lakh shares worth ₹25.04 crore.

How is WeWork India performing?

The stake sale comes after the company reported its Q1 FY27 performance.

WeWork India's total income stood at ₹700.74 crore in the April-June quarter, compared with ₹545.71 crore a year earlier.

At the consolidated level, the company reported a net loss of ₹4.30 crore, narrower than the ₹14.10-crore loss reported in Q1 FY26.

On an operating basis, the company's own investor-relations data shows Q1 FY27 revenue of ₹698 crore, EBITDA of ₹138.3 crore, and PAT of ₹53.2 crore on an IGAAP-equivalent basis.

What Happened After The Deal?

Following the deal announcement, WeWork India shares fell 1.53% to ₹708.50 on the NSE.

The market reaction comes as investors assess both sides of the transaction—the stake reduction by WeWork Global's affiliate and the institutional buying that accompanied it.

At the same time, the participation of institutional investors such as ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, Motilal Oswal, and HDFC Life puts their subsequent holding patterns on the radar.

However, a stake sale by an existing shareholder does not, by itself, indicate a change in the company's underlying business performance. Investors typically look at the reason for the sale, the identity of buyers, and the company's operating fundamentals alongside such transactions.
