Reliance-Rolls-Royce AMCA Deal: RIL Steps Into India’s Fighter Engine Race

Reliance-Rolls-Royce AMCA Deal: RIL Steps Into India’s Fighter Engine Race

Reliance Industries is adding another ambitious project to its growing industrial portfolio. And this time, the deal is about Fighter Jet Engines.

RIL and UK-based Rolls-Royce have announced a strategic partnership to jointly design, develop and manufacture an indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. It aims to develop a home-grown fifth-generation fighter jet.

And there’s more to the announcement than just an engine.

What are Reliance and Rolls-Royce planning?

Both tycoons plan to explore a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India focused on Advanced Power and Propulsion Technologies.

This potential facility could also open the door to collaborations across defence, civil aerospace, and new power and propulsion systems.

For Reliance, this is where the Rolls-Royce partnership gets interesting.

Rolls-Royce brings its expertise in advanced aircraft propulsion, while Reliance brings its technology, manufacturing scale, and execution capabilities.

As Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, put it:

“India’s strategic autonomy requires sovereign capability in critical technologies.”

He said the partnership aims to combine Rolls-Royce’s propulsion expertise with Reliance’s capabilities to build an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India.

What’s the Role of the AMCA Engine In India?

India wants the AMCA to become its next-generation, Fifth-Generation Fighter Aircraft.

But developing the aircraft is only one part of the challenge. Building a sophisticated fighter engine is a major technological undertaking in itself.

That is why this proposed partnership with Rolls-Royce matters beyond Reliance.

A successful project could help build capabilities across aerospace engineering, advanced manufacturing, and propulsion technology, strengthening India's broader push for defence self-reliance.

For RIL, the partnership could create a long-term opportunity in India's expanding defence and aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.

The Indian government has also allocated ₹15 billion ($157 million) to fund the AMCA programme as it looks to accelerate development.

What does Rolls-Royce say?

Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç also called the collaboration a major milestone towards building a self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in India.

“Together, with our existing partnerships and capabilities in India, this marks a major milestone towards building a robust, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country.”
