About the BSE Utilities

The BSE Utilities index is a sectoral index designed to measure the performance of companies involved in utility services such as electricity, gas distribution, and water supply.

The index includes 30+ companies engaged in power generation, transmission, gas distribution, and integrated utility services. These businesses play a key role in supporting industrial activity and everyday consumption.

By focusing on utility companies, the index provides a snapshot of how essential service providers are performing within the broader market.

How are the BSE Utilities Stocks Selected?

The BSE Utilities index follows a sector-classification-based approach to identify companies within the utilities segment.

  1. Step 1: Universe Definition

Companies are selected from the BSE AllCap universe.
  2. Step 2: Sector Classification

Companies are assigned based on their macro-economic indicator. Classification follows the Common India Industry Classification Structure (CIICS).
  3. Step 3: Inclusion Criteria

Only companies classified under the utilities sector are considered. All eligible share classes of a company are included under the same classification.
  4. Step 4: Final Inclusion

All 35 eligible companies within the utilities sector are included in the index.

How is the BSE Utilities Index Calculated?

The BSE Utilities index is calculated using the free-float market capitalisation method with defined capping rules.

  1. Step 1: Free-float Market Cap calculation

The first step is to calculate the free-float market cap of all stock constituents.
Free-Float Market Cap = Free-Float Shares x Current Market Price (Excluding Promoter Holdings).
  2. Step 2: Index value calculation

The free-float market capitalisation of all constituents is aggregated to derive the index value.
Index Value = (Current Free-Float Market Cap / Base Market Cap) x Base Value
  3. Step 3: Weight Assignment

Stocks are weighted based on free-float market capitalisation.
  4. Step 4: Capping Rules Applied

Single stock weight is capped at 33%.
Top three stocks together cannot exceed 63% of the index.
  5. Step 5: Redistribution Mechanism

If these caps are breached, excess weight is redistributed proportionately among uncapped stocks.
The ranking of stocks remains aligned with their free-float market capitalisation.
  6. Step 6: Adjustments & Continuity

Corporate actions such as stock splits, bonus issues, and mergers are adjusted to maintain index continuity.
  7. Step 7: Review & Rebalancing

Quarterly updates are conducted in March, June, September, and December.
Changes take effect on the Monday following the third Friday.
